Wellborn Fence Installation: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
Wellborn fence installation in Riverside typically runs $3,500 – $9,000 depending on linear footage, material choice, and whether we’re pulling an old fence or starting fresh. Trevor Nash and the Penhallow Remodeling Riverside crew keep Wellborn-specific hardware and lumber profiles on hand for most common repairs, which means we can usually diagnose a failing section, price it, and have the work scheduled within the week, not the month. Most Riverside homeowners realize something’s wrong when a gate starts dragging, a post leans after a Santa Ana wind event, or the bottom rail pulls loose from the concrete footing.
We’re an independent remodeling contractor serving Riverside and surrounding neighborhoods. We install and repair Wellborn fence components, but we are not a Wellborn factory outlet or corporate installer. What that means for you: we match parts to your existing fence whether they came from a Wellborn catalog or a big-box shelf, and we stand behind the install with a written guarantee.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn’s fence line spans a few distinct series, and the difference matters when a single section fails. The Wellborn Estate Collection uses a thicker 5/4-inch picket profile with a beveled top edge. The Wellborn Traditional Series runs standard 1×6 dog-ear pickets that match most hardware-store replacements. If your fence came with the Wellborn Shadowbox pattern, the pickets alternate sides of the rail, and repairs need to follow that same stagger or the patch job looks like a patch.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up Riverside homeowners: Wellborn’s post caps and rail brackets changed dimensions in 2019. Pre-2019 fences use a 3.5-inch post cap with a square bottom. Newer Wellborn posts take a 3.625-inch cap with a slightly domed profile. The difference is an eighth of an inch, and it’s enough that the old cap won’t seat and the new one will rattle. We measure before we order, every time.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for structural parts like posts, rails, and gate hinges, we recommend OEM Wellborn or a brand-matched equivalent. For pickets and trim, a quality Western red cedar or pressure-treated southern yellow pine from a Riverside lumber yard performs just as well and often costs 15 – 20% less. We’ll tell you which is which and give you the price both ways.

Signs Your Wellborn Fence Installation Is Failing
- Post lean, especially after wind. Riverside’s Santa Ana winds push hard against fence faces, and a post that starts leaning usually means the concrete footing is undersized for the post height or the wood is rotting at ground contact. If the post moves when you push it, the fix is a new footing, not a new brace.
- Gate drags or won’t latch. The hinge side post has settled or the gate frame has wracked. Wellborn gates are built with a diagonal brace that runs from the bottom hinge corner up to the top latch corner, and if the brace is running the wrong direction, the gate will always sag.
- Bottom rail pulled loose from the post. Riverside’s dry summer heat shrinks lumber, and if the rail was toe-nailed rather than face-screwed, it pulls out. This one is usually repairable in an afternoon if we catch it before water gets into the open grain.
- Pickets cracking at the fasteners. Cedar and redwood move with humidity swings, and if the original installer over-drove nails or used the wrong fastener, the wood splits along the grain. That’s a material-and-technique problem, not age.
- Rot at the post base. Riverside irrigation runs tight to property lines, and a post sitting in constant damp will soften from the bottom. Tapping the base with a hammer tells us what we need to know: a hollow thud means the post needs replacement and the footing check before we’re done.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Wellborn fence installation in Riverside runs $3,500 – $9,000. A 50-linear-foot section of standard 6-foot Traditional Series with one gate lands around $4,200 – $5,800. Push toward 100 linear feet with Shadowbox detailing, steel post inserts, and a second gate, and you’re at the top of that range.
Every quote is a written price before any work starts, with the part cost and the labor separated line by line. You’ll see exactly what each post, section, and gate costs, what we’re charging to demo and haul the old fence, and what the footing work involves. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every fence installation in writing: if a post shifts, a gate binds, or a section fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. No re-inspection fee, no service call, no argument.

There are things you can safely check, and things you shouldn’t. You can check whether a gate latch still lines up, whether pickets are cracked, and whether post bases show soft wood you can press with a thumb. What you shouldn’t do is try to reset a leaning post yourself or rebuild a gate without knowing how the brace should run. The post reset means digging a new footing, setting concrete, and bracing the fence plumb while it cures; get it an inch off and the whole section fights you forever.
Fence work doesn’t carry the same tension danger as a garage spring, but a 6-foot fence section in the wind is a slab of wood that weighs more than you do. We take it down in sections with two people. If you’d rather not find out what a wind gust does to a half-cut post, call (341) 895-1170 and we’ll take a look.
FAQs

In Riverside’s climate, a well-built Wellborn fence lasts 15 – 25 years; posts set in concrete with proper drainage reach the top of that range, and sections sitting against sprinkler-soaked soil fail closer to 10. Cedar holds up better than pine in our dry heat, but both need post bases kept clear of constant moisture.
Most single-section failures are repairable: we replace the damaged pickets, reset or replace a post, and match the existing Wellborn series so the patch doesn’t read from the curb. If the rail system is compromised across multiple sections, replacement usually costs less than repeated repair. Call (341) 895-1170 and we’ll tell you which path makes sense for your fence.
For a typical 50 – 75 linear foot Riverside fence, we plan two working days: day one is demo, footing inspection, and post-setting; day two is rails, pickets, gates, and cleanup. Concrete needs a day to cure before we hang the full section weight, and we set that expectation before we schedule.
We keep common Wellborn post caps, gate hinges, latches, and rail brackets in our Riverside service stock, along with standard cedar pickets and rails. Any series-specific or dimensional item gets measured, ordered, and installed within the week. We’ll tell you at the estimate whether your part is on the truck or two days out. We also service KraftMaid cabinet hardware, Cambria countertop profiles, and Silestone slab edges for our remodeling clients.
