Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
Schluter kitchen remodeling in Riverside typically runs between $14,000 and $45,000 installed, and most homeowners call us when a waterproofing layer has failed, a Schluter trim piece has pulled away, or a tile substrate has started to move. We stock and install Schluter-compatible systems including Kerdi membrane, Ditra underlayment, and Schluter edge profiles, and we can usually have a crew out within a week of your estimate. The way most Riverside homeowners discover the problem is either a cracked tile near the sink, grout that keeps crumbling no matter how many times it’s re-grouted, or water staining on the cabinet face below a countertop seam. Trevor Nash and our crews have seen enough Schluter installs across Riverside to know exactly what goes wrong and what it takes to fix it properly.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To
If your kitchen has tile work, a tiled backsplash, or a tile-to-countertop transition, it almost certainly uses one of three Schluter product families: the Kerdi waterproofing membrane, the Ditra uncoupling membrane, or a Schluter metal edge profile like Schiene, Rondec, or Jolly. Each one has a compatibility gotcha. Kerdi membrane is 8 mils thick and needs a minimum 2-inch overlap at every seam to stay waterproof. Ditra comes in two versions: Ditra (1/8-inch) for tile and Ditra XL (5/16-inch) specifically matched to hardwood floor height transitions. And Schluter edge profiles are sized by tile thickness plus 1/32 inch, which means a 3/8-inch tile takes a 7/16-inch profile. Get that measurement wrong and the trim either sits proud of the tile or disappears under the grout. We carry OEM Schluter parts, and in some cases a quality aftermarket equivalent makes sense, but for anything that touches water we install genuine Schluter. The warranty math just doesn’t work any other way.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout keeps cracking along the countertop backsplash joint. This usually means the Ditra or cement board underneath is flexing. The countertop moves with everyday use, and the substrate (the layer behind your tile) wasn’t isolated from that movement. No amount of re-grouting fixes it; the substrate has to be redone.
- Dark staining at the bottom edge of the backsplash or under the sink cabinet. Water is wicking behind the tile. Kerdi was either never installed, installed with short seams, or punctured by a fastener. By the time you see the stain, water has already been sitting against wood.
- A Schluter metal edge profile has pulled away from the countertop edge. This usually means the profile was set in mortar that was too dry, or the tile was set over an uneven surface. The profile flexes, catches a dish rack, and eventually pops free.
- Tile feels slightly soft or “drummy” when you knock on it. That hollow sound means the mortar bed has debonded from the surface below. In Riverside’s dry heat, thinset can skin over before a tile is set if the installer is moving too slow on a hot day. The tile is no longer fully supported.
- Grout in a floor area keeps drying out and crumbling white. Southern California’s hard water and dry air pull moisture out of grout faster than it can cure in the heat of summer. If the grout was mixed too dry from the start, it never reaches strength. The Ditra underneath may be fine, but the surface needs to come out to redo it right.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Schluter kitchen remodeling project in Riverside, the full range runs $14,000 to $45,000. If the problem is isolated to a backsplash removal and reset with new Kerdi and proper Schluter trim, you’re looking at $800 to $2,500 for the backsplash work alone, plus any tile you choose. If the failure extends under the sink base or across a floor, the scope widens and you’re into a larger remodel at the $14,000+ mark. What pushes the number up or down: linear feet of tile, whether the countertops stay or get replaced, cabinet condition after the leak, and tile selection. Every quote from Penhallow Remodeling Riverside includes a written price before any work starts, a defined arrival window, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the work fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell standard, and we’ve operated that way since 2004.

You can safely do the diagnosis on your own: check for hollow-sounding tiles, trace any water staining, and pop a loose Schluter profile back into place to see the gap behind it. But the repair itself is not a weekend project. Schluter systems only stay waterproof if the substrate is sound, the seams are overlapped correctly, and the mortar is mixed and applied within its working window. In Riverside’s summer heat, that window is shorter than the bag says. We’ve replaced more than one DIY backsplash where the homeowner set Kerdi over water-damaged drywall and the tile failed again within months. If you’d rather have a number before anyone picks up a tool, call us at (341) 895-1170. We’ll come out, look at what failed, and hand you a written price on the spot.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter Kerdi and Ditra system should last the life of your tile installation, which in a Riverside kitchen is 20 to 30 years or more. What usually fails first is not the Schluter product itself but the install: short seams, the wrong mortar, or a substrate that moved. Call (341) 895-1170 if you’re seeing cracks or water staining and we’ll tell you exactly what you’re working with.
Spot repairs are possible if the damage is limited to a single tile or a loose profile and the membrane underneath is intact. But once water has gotten behind the Kerdi, the only correct fix is to remove the tile, dry out the area completely, replace the damaged membrane, and retile. A patch over a wet substrate just moves the problem six inches to the left. We’ll tell you honestly which one you have and quote the smaller job if that’s all it needs.
A backsplash-only Schluter repair typically takes 2 to 3 working days, including demo, drying time, membrane install, and tile reset. A full kitchen remodel involving Schluter waterproofing, new counters, and cabinets runs 3 to 8 weeks depending on scope and material lead times. We give you a defined arrival window and a realistic schedule before we start, and the schedule is part of your written estimate.
Our crews carry Schluter Kerdi membrane, Schluter edge profiles in the most common Riverside sizes, Ditra and Ditra XL, and the correct Schluter-compatible thinset for each. For less common profile finishes or specialty trim, we order OEM Schluter product and it arrives within a week. You won’t be waiting on a backordered part for a standard kitchen repair. We also work regularly with other trade brands including KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria, and Silestone countertops when the remodel scope goes beyond tile.
