Moen Bathroom Remodeling: The Riverside Owner’s Guide
If you have a Moen fixture that’s leaking, corroded, or just past its prime, a bathroom remodel in Riverside typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 when we handle the full job, and we stock or can source the Moen valves, cartridges, trim kits, and showerheads your project needs. Most homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a drip that won’t quit, a handle that spins without stopping water, or a shower diverter that sends water everywhere except the showerhead. You don’t need a whole new bathroom because a $40 cartridge failed, but if your Moen fixtures are 15 to 20 years old, you may be better off rebuilding the surround, updating the valve, and putting in fresh trim than chasing one repair after another.
We’re an independent remodeling company in Riverside, not affiliated with Moen, but we’ve installed and serviced enough of their fixtures across Arlington, Canyon Crest, and Wood Streets to know which parts match which bodies and which trim kits will actually fit the rough-in you already have.
Which Moen Models This Applies To

Moen has used the same basic valve platform for decades, and that’s both good news and a gotcha. The Moentrol, Posi-Temp, and ExactTemp lines share a pressure-balancing valve body, but the cartridges are not interchangeable between them. Here’s what matters:
- Posi-Temp: The workhorse valve in most Riverside tract homes built from the 1990s onward. Uses a 1222 cartridge (or 1222B, the newer brass-shell version). If you have a single handle and it wiggles or won’t hold temperature, this is almost always your valve.
- Moentrol: Found on older homes and two- or three-handle setups. Uses the 1225 cartridge, which has a distinct brass stem and no pressure-balancing spool. Different tool to pull, different part to order.
- ExactTemp: Moen’s higher-end thermostatic line, common in custom homes in Mission Grove and Hawarden Hills. Uses a larger thermostatic cartridge. Costs more, lasts longer, and needs a deeper rough-in box in the wall.
- Moen M-CORE: The newer universal valve system. If your home was built or remodeled in the last five to seven years, you may have this. The good part is that you can swap trim styles without opening the wall. The catch is that the valve body is proprietary and the trim kits run $200 to $500 more than Posi-Temp equivalents.
The fastest way to identify what you have is to look at the escutcheon plate (the round plate against the wall). Posi-Temp trim usually says “Posi-Temp” in small lettering beneath the handle. If there’s no marking, pull the handle and you’ll see either a white plastic stem (1222) or a brass stem (1225). When we spec a Moen bathroom remodel in Riverside, we confirm the rough-in valve before ordering trim, because a trim kit for the wrong body is a several-hundred-dollar mistake that sits in a box waiting for a return label. We order OEM Moen parts unless a customer specifically asks for aftermarket, and here’s the honest take: some aftermarket cartridges are fine, but the fit tolerances on Moen valve bodies are tight, and a slightly off-spec stem can chatter or leak through the handle within a year. On a part that’s buried inside a finished wall, OEM is the safer money.

Signs Your Moen Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Drip from the spout or showerhead that never stops. This is almost always a worn cartridge or a failed seat and spring inside the valve body. On a Moen, the seat and spring kit (part 96909) costs about $8, and we see these flatten out after 8 to 12 years of Riverside’s hard water eroding the rubber washers.
- Handle spins freely or doesn’t return to center. A Posi-Temp cartridge has an internal pressure-balancing spool that can seize. If the handle won’t stop at the 12 o’clock position or keeps rotating past the stop, the cartridge is done. This is a replace, not a repair.
- Water temperature swings when someone flushes a toilet. That’s the pressure-balancing spool inside the cartridge not doing its job. It’s a safety feature meant to prevent scalding, so this isn’t just an annoyance. It’s a sign the cartridge has failed internally.
- Water leaking behind the wall or staining the ceiling below. This one is serious. It usually means the valve body itself has corroded or a connection has failed, and that’s a wall-opening repair, not a cartridge swap. Riverside’s water is consistently hard, and we’ve pulled valve bodies out of Arlington homes that looked like they’d been sitting in salt water for a decade.
- Reduced water pressure from the showerhead or tub spout. Mineral scale from hard Riverside water builds up in the valve ports and the showerhead aerator. Sometimes a descale and a new cartridge fixes it. Other times, the valve body ports are so restricted that the valve needs replacing, which pushes the job into a bigger remodel scope.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A Moen-specific bathroom remodel in Riverside usually lands between $9,000 and $28,000, and the spread is driven by a few specific things. At the lower end, you’re looking at a cartridge replacement or valve rebuild with new trim, maybe a new showerhead and tub spout, fresh caulk, and a clean-up of the surround. That runs $9,000 to $14,000 if we’re not moving plumbing or opening the wall beyond the valve access.
The middle and upper ranges involve what most people actually mean by “remodel”: new tile or a solid-surface surround, new Moen valve and trim, a glass enclosure, a new vanity, lighting, and floor tile. In a Riverside bathroom with a standard tub footprint, that’s $15,000 to $22,000. If you want to convert a tub to a walk-in shower with a Moen digital valve or thermostatic setup, add custom glass, or move a drain, you’re at $22,000 to $28,000 and up.
Every job includes the written price before we start, the parts and labor broken out line by line, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing on every Moen bathroom remodel we do in Riverside.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re reasonably handy, replacing a Moen cartridge is a 30-minute job with a cartridge puller and the right replacement part. Shut off the water, pull the handle, swap the cartridge, and you’re done. Where DIY goes sideways is when the cartridge has fused to the valve body (common with Riverside’s mineral-heavy water), the valve body itself is cracked or corroded, or you’re trying to swap trim kits across different Moen generations that don’t actually fit. We’ve seen homeowners force the wrong cartridge into a valve and crack the body, at which point the $40 repair becomes a thousand-dollar wall-opening job. If water is getting behind the tile, stop and call us. That’s not a cartridge problem, and guessing wrong means mold, drywall damage, and a much bigger bill. If you just want it diagnosed, we’ll quote the repair honestly and do the cartridges all day. Call (341) 895-1170 and we’ll set up a visit.
FAQs

In our experience, a Moen Posi-Temp cartridge lasts 8 to 15 years in Riverside’s hard-water conditions before the pressure-balancing spool or the seals start to fail. The valve body itself can last 30 to 50 years if it was installed correctly and isn’t subjected to constant thermal stress, but hard water shortens the useful life of brass components. If you’re on city water without a softener, plan on a cartridge replacement roughly every decade. Call (341) 895-1170 and we’ll inspect yours.
Yes, and in many cases that’s the smarter move. If the valve body is sound and the failure is a cartridge, seat and spring, or worn trim, we’ll rebuild it for a fraction of what a full remodel costs, and the repair carries the same written guarantee as our larger jobs. The time to replace instead of repair is when the body itself has failed or you’re already opening walls for tile work anyway. Call (341) 895-1170 for an honest read.
A cartridge or valve rebuild is a same-day job in most cases, while a full bathroom remodel with new tile, glass, and fixtures typically runs 3 to 6 weeks depending on tile work, glass lead time, and whether we’re moving plumbing. We give you a written schedule and a defined arrival window at the start, so the timeline isn’t a mystery. Call (341) 895-1170 and we’ll walk you through it.
We stock the most common Moen service parts on our trucks: 1222 and 1225 cartridges, 96909 seat and spring kits, tub spouts, showerheads, and escutcheon trim. If your job needs an M-CORE valve or a specific trim finish, we order it from our supplier and usually have it in hand within a few business days. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the cabinetry and countertop sides of a remodel if your project goes beyond the plumbing wall. Call (341) 895-1170 with your model number or a photo of the handle and we’ll tell you if we’ve got the part on the shelf.
